Canada 150 official logo and font designers
WHO: Canada 150 official logo & Canada 150 typeface designers
WHY WE LIKE THIS BRAND: In 2017, Canada will celebrate 150 years of Confederation. The Minister of Heritage has unveiled a Canada 150 official logo and font for the occasion. The Canada 150 logo creates a contemporary visual theme that will be used in numerous ways to mark 2017 as a year to remember.
Ariana Cuvin is from Toronto. She created the winning Canada 150 official logo. Her design was chosen last year from over 300 eligible entries in a nation-wide student competition. The designer for the Canada 150 typeface is Ottawa-born, world renown font creator, Raymond Larabie.
Four diamonds at the base represent the original founding provinces: Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. They were the four provinces that formed Confederation in 1867. Nine more diamonds extend out from the base, representing provinces and territories. The logo represents the 13 provinces and territories that now make up Canada.
A ground breaking typeface design has also been created for the Canada 150 celebrations. Raymond Larabie designed a single, unified font that works for Canada’s two official languages. It also contains the elements needed for Canada’s Aboriginal languages. The Canada 150 font comes in light and regular weights, and includes Latin characters and accents, common Cyrillic characters.
Mr. Larabie says his Canada 150 font design was influenced by Canada’s surroundings. He was grateful for the opportunity to apply his skills as a typeface designer.
“My life in Canada has undoubtedly influenced my typeface designs. There’s a subtle accumulation of national identity that viewers unconsciously absorb from type…It’s a chance to contribute to the 150-year development of Canada’s very own visual identity.” Raymond Larabie.
